English class

Today I became a supervisor of exam for the first time in my life. In the class I work as a teaching assistant every Thursday, we gave an exam. We will not have classes for the next two weeks for Xmas and New Year. So we gave an exam before the break to check if students are following.

They are in the eighth grade but their ages vary. My friend Cévéline just turned to be 16 years old and there is a madam who seems older than me.

私が中学の時は「I'm fine thank you and you?」といって先生は「I'm fine, too, thank you」と必ず返していたなと思い出した。

As I said "Good afternoon everyone" with my maximum of American accent, they fell silent. Then I continued "How are you?" To this, they answered in unison, "I am fine!" I remembered that in my middle school, it was always us saying "I'm fine thank you and you?" and our teacher responding "I'm fine, too, thank you."

My father is beating (she)" この(she)を他の形に直すという問題。 My father is beating her."

So teachers write exam questions on the black board and students tear their notebooks to hand in with their answers written. There was a question like this: USE THE CORRECT PRONOUN "My father is beating (she.)"

設問1&2/ Question 1&2

Miyu is going to Ouagadougou." ふと、使われた例文が"Miyu is beating her." や"My father is beating Miyu."

Teacher Natal uses my name in the example sentences. Today it was "Miyu is going to Ouagadougou." Then I thought, I'm glad that my name was not used in the other sentence, which would be "Miyu is beating her." Or "My father is beating Miyu." ...

設問3&4/ Question 3&4

Question 1 and 2 have 5 questions in total and each has 1 pt. Question 3 and 4 have 7 questions and it's 0.5 pt. each. So maximum of 8.5 pt. can be earned until here.
How surprisingly, Question 5 has 5 questions and it's 10 pt. each. They can earn 50 pt. on Question 5 out of maximum score of 58.5 pt. I found this allocation of marks interesting but I was the only one laughing.

5/ Question 5 (10 pt. each)

As watching them taking the exam in a dim classroom, I was recalling my school days in Tokyo. My classroom was in pink color. Our toilet was so clean. My classmates were of the same age.

It was funny watching myself making a serious face to do a job of supervision. Then I thought, teachers are not big but looking big is a part of their job.

Maybe because I played so much hooky, there are only two things I often remember of my school days: my theater club activity and my great teacher who always helped me to live. As teaching in a school, which looks totally different from my old school, my figure overlaps with the memory of my great teacher. Such time, I feel the responsibility of being there as an educator.

Answer sheet

My first overseas experience was in England at the age of 14. There, "English", which was just a required subject to study, became a language to me, a language that exists in someone's daily life. What I secretly wish is that by me being here, they will feel the same as I did in England. The feeling of knowing that a language is a language. So for the time being, I'm speaking English enjoyably in front of them with my full power.
