ディエブグの街に色をー2週目/Giving Colors to the City of Diebougou ProjectーWeek2

I remember what my mom once said when I was little, when I pinched my nose for the odor as a garbage truck passed by. She said "we live because there are some who take over those dirty jobs, we should be thankful to and respect them. Pinching your nose like this is so disrespectful."  What she said sounded so right to me and I stopped pinching my nose after then.

Well, thinking about it now, my father's job, plumbing, would probably be considered to be a job of the same category. Today, in Diebougou, garbage collection is not yet considered as a job. They are unpaid, but collecting garbage every week. I wish, someday, their work will come to earn their living, and will be thanked and respected by their population.

Monday

I collected garbage with the association in the city. There are about 80 trash cans and they are collected every Monday. I worked about 4 hours and got dusty all over. Garbage collection is a heavy work. Garbage of 1 week is heaped up on the carrier of a 3-wheels-car called Taxi Moto. Someone like me, a foreigner of the white skin as they call, is not expected to be a blue-collar worker here. People looked at me suspiciously, but at the same time, respectfully.

Tuesday

A.M.

With Mr. Painter, Kinda, I went around the city to show him our garbage. I took photos of some "materials" which he said are useful, such as bins, broken shoes, plastics, and so on. Then he took me his home and said that we will do some exhibitions of our objects some months later. He looked happy talking about it.

P.M.

Ayaka, an other volunteer who lives in another town called me to ask if I'm interested in making trash cans as part of a project of JICA 15th anniversary. What a great timing she called me. I called up BLAN and went to Diebougou's city hall to ask the number of population. He said he wants 500 new trash cans. But to begin with, the objective of JICA Volunteer Project isn't monetary assistance. Telling JICA we want 500 trash cans because we need them, will not be accepted.

Wednesday

It was such a long day. With BLAN, concerning Yamada and Ayaka's opinions, I decided the context of our project. We'll ask for 34 trash cans and we will place them to all the elementary, middle, and high schools, churches, and mosques in Diebougou after giving them workshops of public hygiene and getting their agreement of paying 1000Fcfa (about $2) a month for weekly garbage collection. Our goal would be to convince people that trash cans are necessary and make them want to buy the second, third trash cans.

Thursday

Our project seems to be accepted by JICA but not as a part of 15th anniversary but as another bland new project of Diebougou.

And apart from that, another volunteer Ms.Eda, who also works for public hygiene like me in another town, called me to ask if I'd be interested in her project of painting the walls of elementary schools' toilets with kids. Why not? I've got a painter of Diebougou here! So we decided to do all this together at the same time.

BLAN(ゴミ回収アソシエーション代表/公衆衛生<ゴミ箱利用>ワークショップ、今後のゴミ回収担当)

KINDA(絵描き/絵を描くレクチャー、トイレペインティング、ゴミでアート作り担当)

KABORE(保健省勤務/ 公衆衛生<トイレ使用>ワークショップ担当)

Our team will be

BLAN (garbage collection association/ in charge of public hygiene <utilization of trash cans> WS and garbage collection)

KINDA (painter/ in charge of painting WS, Toilet painting, and Arts objects made of garbage)

KABORE (health center/ in charge of public hygiene <utilization of toilet> WS)

Me (JICA Volunteer/ in charge of planing and coordinating)

Something like this, and we'll be going around schools.

Friday

One of my family of Burkina, Juliette teaches in an elementary school. Today I visited her workplace to see how it is as our project mostly targets schools. I've talked with the school principal for about 2.5 hours. He gave me a positive response to the idea of the project. As schools will be in the break from Dec 20th to Jan 5th, maybe we can start it next year.

Saturday

With KINDA, I headed to our dumping ground to collect some useful materials for making objects. I'm happy that we've got started.
