Deux ethnies /2つの民族/Sinhala and Tamil

f:id:miyuleilani:20161101001339j:image

In Sri Lanka, about 70% belong to the ethnic group Sinhala and about 20 to 25% to Tamil. The civil war ended in 2009 was started by Tamil group against Sinhala superiorness in the country. I think we can say that still the gap between two ethnic groups exist strongly. Today I had a chance to visit a family with grandma Sinhala and grandpa Tamil. Kids told me proudly that they belong to both.

Me, I don't even speak their languages, I don't know if I am being able to see what is here, but marriage between two different groups can contribute to decrease discriminated views in children's mind because they are both. And I believe it will help the world to be a comfortable place not only for the majority but for everyone.

I've gotten my one way plane ticket couple days ago: Leaving Narita, Japan on 12/4- Arriving to Ouagadougou, Burkina on 12/9.

f:id:miyuleilani:20160907064222j:image

Of course it's not that it needs 5 days to get to Burkina from Japan but I'm stoping at AddisAbaba, Ethiopia for some days just to have some fun. I know I want to stay in west Africa for a while but haven't decided where or how. I could apply in Japan to be dispatched here, too. Whether to buy round trip or one way, at the end I said, gotta buy one way cause it's cheaper as nothing has been decided. When I moved to NY as well it was a one way ticket I bought. Buying it made me feel like I've made my mind up, that I'm staying here. And I feel it's the real life, at least for me, I feel life with a limit of 2 years, I wasn't well grounded or very independent.

My people in Diebougou have prepared, without telling me, a new project of recycling for me to work on next year, while me thinking about applying a job in a country nearby, then now they tell me not to leave here next year because there is a work for me to do;)) then that whole thing could make me think about making a NGO here, but the next moment I'm thinking about doing a master in Ghana. Wmm.

f:id:miyuleilani:20160907065346j:image

Maybe it's interesting enough to stay here and make Diebougou to be the first city in Burkina where is known for recycling, though the subject itself doesn't really attract me (but that's what I've been doing the past two years;)) I don't know what's going to be happening, but a thing for sure is that my life is in the good flow.

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102052j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102206j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102256j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102451j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102538j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102651j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160811102801j:image

"Japan and China are parts of Europe, right?/ 日本も中国もヨーロッパだよね?"

Came to Navielegane, a village 15- 20km from my site to visit a school for unschooled youths to learn elementary materials. 6 months, $40 per year for 3 years. Some would even go take higher education after here.

Not only French, but also Science, Math, History and Geography they teach. After listening to me during the entire morning talking about Asia, and it's difference from Europe, he said the sentence above. After all, he hasn't understood the meaning of the word 'Asia,' though he teaches geography or history;)) Mistakenly estimating the level of education or amount of knowledge of people, I often experience this sort of difficulty of not being able to tell what I want to tell.

f:id:miyuleilani:20160806101122j:image

The fact that I'm still finding difficulty in myself accepting to be called 'white woman' actually shows me my own cognition of self as Asian, and my pride for being Asian

f:id:miyuleilani:20160806092425j:image

Being called 'Chinese' is something positive for me. I'd correct it sometimes, or completely ignore it if it was a call from a strenger passing by, but it's because I find it impolite to call someone by her nationality like this, so I ignore the call when it's 'Japanese' as well. I'd want to be called by name, and if it's someone who knows me, he knows what I want. The fact that there are people who can differentiate me from 'White' and guessing 'Chinese' is very positive because in my understanding, majority of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwaneese, those East Asians, are from the same racial roots. I might be Chinese, but I would not be White West European. So wrong.

f:id:miyuleilani:20160806101029j:image

f:id:miyuleilani:20160806095213j:image

Then I wonder what do I want with all this. I'm small and incapable of so much things, so it can't be helped..

sick and death / 病と死

f:id:miyuleilani:20160210064428j:image

My baby friend got sick and hospitalized in the nearby city, Gaoa, last week. No one knows what's wrong with her, well that's the major case for everybody. People get sick and if it's an adult they say it's malaria or because of "general tiredness" then in the worst case, they die.

Sickness and death are very close to people's lives. On one hand I wish medical development to arrive someday but on the other hand, I learn a lot from people's way of acceptance of death. No one gets surprised by the arrival of sickness or death, they cry hard then will continue on living.

I find most of the nurses here almost as useless as myself. But we feel we have to do something for the poor sick baby then we ask for the consultation and treatment, then pray. I think they pray because it feels like there is nothing but to pray they can do. Since 15 years that my grandma, who taught me two phrases of a sutra, has passed, I prayed. Well I prayed just by saying the sutra as I don't know any other way of praying.

I felt the smallness of humans, or maybe just uselessness of myself. I don't think I will make a pray again for a real while, but really hope my little friend's recovery.

Ioloniolo and Dolo and Saptan/

Visited clinics in three villages. There is no doctor but 3 to 6 nurses (they give consultations) at each location.

This guy in the photo with me is our driver who drives ambulance as well. As there is no doctor nor much medicine in the villages, when it comes to an urgent situation and if the ambulance is available, he comes from Diebougou to take patients to a bigger hospital. He was telling me a story of when he had to go get a woman, who was about to die from a snake bite, to a village very far in the middle of the night, a story of the woman's recovery, which he felt very proud of his job. The whole story and the fact how much he appreciates his job made me feel warm.

Saptan /

Ioloniolo /

Well of course it's better if there are doctors and meds. As I hear that there aren't serum stored if it's not a city then many die just because of that every year.

Dolo/

When I hear someone's story who is proud of his job, there are two types. Type A: feeling of proudness comes mainly from his socially succeeded status. Type B: without any of that sort, his mind is filled by the simple results or effects from his work. I feel that often in the talk of Type A, "numbers" are involved, and of Type B, "humans" are involved including this person himself. I myself I think is both, or maybe many are, there' aren't many people who are absolutely one sided but when one is being proud of himself, often one is strongly tilted to one side. But I like listening to Type B because it gives me comforts and the other makes me a bit tense.

I feel that very recently I'm finally getting used to this place. Finally I feel that I'm living here.

I've never lived in a "country side" before here. Sometimes I find myself strongly looking for some sort of new stimulus in this supposed to be ordinary life. Everyday is coming to be fixed and meeting the same loved people everyday with no doubts whether if it's okay to be this way. I'm becoming to be a part of this city where everyone is everyone's relatives, and certainly this lifestyle is very new for me.

Living in those stable days, sometimes I'm just very positively calmly happy and comforted but then the next moment I am looking for something else and wanting to go on a trip.

Before here, there were 1 or 2 persons who were very near me, and some others who were like my buddies then I lived my each day in the rapid cycle of encounters with many many impressive others. Here, there is this feeling of "everyone is related to everyone", well often literally is, and after a year and some, maybe as now there are more people who call me their family, I'm finally coming to feel that I've got used to it and am living here.

But I realize that I'm wanting changes so I come to ponder what I'm wanting from that then.

Diebougou /

日記/ diary very personal

Woke up at 6am then to the office, saying hi to everyone doing Internet until noon, to Brigite's to eat lunch, to Kabore's and fall asleep, to Mr. Karate's to say hi, to Malo's store ending up having a discussion on a topic of race, to No-Biel to give hugs to Chieck and Marcus, to Sami's to drink a cup of tea, then back home washing myself and clothes, then it's already passed 6pm.

I just wonder sometimes, that if there are any other places in this world where people welcome me with so much energies being expressed. Similar feeling I had in a countryside in the states, but I like this way of expression of love towards people, the expression that is very direct and could seem exaggerated. This world could be just with full of lies but there always be the truths inside. Then I'd rather live in the world where is filled with positive lies. Maybe exaggerate one's tiny positive energy to the maximum, then let it be out. If I can believe it till the end, then I can say it all was just the truth, at least for me.

Maybe they like me because I'm Japanese, because I'm a foreigner. Of course that can't be the only reason but should be a part. But so what. That can't be changed. The way I look, my skin color, my native tone, or the culture I was raised in, will never change. Those things can even be the proof of myself for being myself. In these very changeable days that I don't know where to find sure things, I should keep those unchangeable myself because they could indicate me the path to look back when I get lost, to confirm myself.

After a year, I still get annoyed by my own feelings of isolation regarding to people's tendency of making differences between myself and themselves for our skin color. Maybe it is because in my teens I was feeling inferior in comparison to others for not being able to find what they seemed to find important important. Maybe that's why I still don't like it when being told that I am different. But the hardest was when being told that I was wrong because there is a universal right and I didn't consider it so. Then maybe it's way easier to be given up at the first place for the reason that I'm different that I can't be helped.

Everyday is very new as if I am just born when I wake up. I've been almost always like this since long time ago. When there is a performance to give or a fixed work to do, I kinda fake myself with force to make me exist in a spot where I can be the best of me for the time programmed. Because I've already learned how to prepare myself, I feel that I'm somehow managing to live a social life. But when there aren't those needs, I face to myself at each moment to ponder what the heck to do now, or now, or now, everyday is very tiresome and very new.

Often that tiresome me makes me tired and I feel like I just wanna hibernate but because you say it's okay you still love me in the all the way how I am, I try to love me as well as much as possible, and then I think that I can only live my very new today with my best.
